POSITION: Technical Services Manager/Lab Manager (MS or PhD)

LOCATION: Chicago, Ill area (relocation package provided)

SALARY: $100K + , additional bonus of up to 18%


Lead and manage the Regional Application Lab (coordinate new internal application work, external application testing) to provide technical support to the sales team

4 direct reports, MS degreed Microbiolist, Food Application Scientiest, Meat Application Technologist, Food Application Technologist

Act as liaison to the Innovation function within company

Develop/manage company network plan to capture application knowledge and provide for easy access from sales/applications team

Responsible for hiring/managing talent necessary (i.e. food technologist, meat technologist, lab tech) to efficiently and effectively run the Regional Application Lab and provide sales support when necessary

Enhance capabilities of Regional Application Lab to reduce outside research costs or improve response time (i.e. maintaining/adding new equipment as lab develops)

Visit customers with the sales team as needed to understand market needs and support growth of new product sales

Primary responsibility for safety of workers/visitors in laboratory


Hire appropriate technical team members as listed above (primarily Microbiologist) to have fully functioning technical services team (results viewed by having resources in place no later than April/May 2012.)

Act as primary technical liaison to company headquarters in order to transfer knowledge to the US sales team and customers for the purposes of introducing new products, growing sales and meeting budget (results viewed by meeting budget)

Successful implementation of user friendly database for application knowledge management. Results viewed by timing (No later than 4th quarter 2012)

Coordinate all application needs for the US Food market (both internal and external research) needed to successfully launch new products and expand opportunities for existing products. Results viewed by efficient use of the research budget and measurement of net sales directly attributable to application work done in the lab.

Ensure safety of all personnel and/or visitors in the lab (results viewed by zero accidents and maintaining safety systems needed to meet local codes)


Daily interactions within Sales and Marketing communications and Customer service

Weekly interactions with Customers- primarily food safety, product development, and quality assurance

Bi-Monthly interaction with upper level management such as Business Owners, Sr. VP, Marketing or sales.

Daily interactions with company- Category Managers, Innovation and Application Center Manager

Weekly interactions with outside research facilities to determine progress on projects & discuss new research needed


Implementing a knowledge management system for capturing application and product knowledge for the region. This has not been done before and will be a challenge given other priorities of the job. Strong communication and coordination with the Innovation team as well as NA sales team will be critical in developing and implementing this new system.

Prioritizing efforts related to technical services (i.e. managing several different priorities such as internal application needs, external research, sales support, etc.) For the most part, this should be resolved via good two-way communication with the NA Food team to determine highest priorities and communicate our capabilities


Support and contribute to Food Budget of $168M

Support new product sales total $2M


Doctorate level education in science discipline (PhD) preferred

Strong commercial background

Strong technical competency in Meat, Poultry and Food Science

Minimum 8 10 years of experience in R&D, Innovation, and/or other laboratory environment

Focused, structured and flexible person

Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills- both written and oral

Supportive and team player

Must be proficient in Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook
