Director Applications - Custom Flavors/Ingredients

Main focus on Dairy flavors, with additional expertise with meat, savory, bakery/sweet, beverage, oriental and limitless other custom flavors used in finished food applications.

Solutions-oriented Manager/Sr Food Scientist with proven success in the Formulation & Applications of Flavors (Liquid, Pastes, Powders) for finished products such as cheese & other sauces, salad dressings, soups, bakery, dry mix meals/entrees, beverages etc. for major food companies.

Work closely with customers to develop customized flavors/flavor systems tailored to their specific needs. Committed to exceed customer expectations.

Able to coordinate a substantial number of projects and presentations concurrently.

Coordinate activities of flavors applications lab and sample lab.

Manage/Mentor 3-4 direct reports (food applications scientist)

Serve as technical resource for other product development/flavor creation/application personnel as well as for sales, marketing, QC/QA, sourcing and production.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: [Other duties may be assigned.]

         Coordinate activities of flavors applications lab and sample lab. Manage/Mentor a growing staff of 3-4 food scientists

         Develop and direct the preparation of experiments, applications, and demonstrations revolving around new product development. Revise/improve existing flavors.

         Provide innovative ideas for ongoing product improvement.

         Help determine priority of new projects and distribute projects among product development/flavor creation/application personnel to best meet the project conditions.

         Assist sales staff in preparing for and presenting customer demonstrations. Participate in trade shows. Travel (~25%)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES. Leadership role in the department includes, but is not limited to:

         Provide leadership, direction and guidance to a staff of food applications scientists.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS. Level of supervisory oversight and guidance is:

         Provides outline of daily projects and interacts with process through completion.


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

1.       Have a working knowledge of kitchen and laboratory equipment

2.       Work requires the consistent exercise of discretion and judgment to accurately develop and follow written guidelines and instructions

3.       Broad knowledge of ingredients used in manufacturing of finished products, specifically with Dairy, Sweet, and Savory flavors. Desirable application categories include: soups, sauces, dressings, baked items, battered and breaded items.

4.       Desire and ability to perform as part of a team.

5.       Strong personnel skills



Minimum of 10 years experience in food science. Product development &/or Applications. Fermentation / Culture technology beneficial.

Bachelor's degree or higher in a food science or related discipline is required.

Culinary training is beneficial.
