$70K to $90K + 15% bonus

Summary:

 

The R&D Manager provides leadership to the development of new products in the areas of Soft-Ripened Cheese (Brie), Feta, Goat, and processed cheese spreadable products and other specialty cheeses to achieve business goals for new product launches. This position is responsible for improvements in quality and processing of existing products produced to increase quality or enhance product value. Also provides technical support to resolve products/production performance issues and to ensure procedures executed to produce consistent quality products. This position evaluates new and alternative ingredients, and design and conduct trials that lead to innovative new products, flavors, and/or applications. The ideal candidate will have proven ability to practice development process systematically and innovatively via bench top development, pilot plant trials, production-scale plant trials, and database decisions for next steps.

 

Accountabilities:

         Responsible for the accuracy of the trials and the scheduling of them

         Responsible during the launch of the product for the Quality, the safety and the shelf life of the new product

         Define and explore new technologies to optimize the current process

         Recommend and manage the R&D budget of the plant

         Documentation of all information including development data, procedure, and standard related to product and process

         The R&D Mgr reports to the Corp Dir of R&D at a different location

Responsibilities:

1.      Develop all new products for the Company (soft-ripened cheese, feta, goat, and process cheese)

v  Make benchtop trials

         Design and carry out trials

         Chemical, microbiological, and sensory evaluation of trial products

         Analyze trial results

 

2.      For Brie and feta, make bench top trials in R&D cheese vats

 

v  Organize and carry out industrial trials

         Work with plant to schedule

         Create process for production

         Assist as needed for industrial trials

         Evaluate results of trials

          

3.      Validate new and alternative ingredients

v  Ensure new ingredients and suppliers are set up in SAP

 

4.      Determine formula, bills of materials, and formula costs

5.      Determine specifications for new products or changes to existing products

6.      Carry out shelf life and sensory evaluations of product developments and changes

7.      Help prepare nutrition facts for new products

 

 

8.      Write NPAs and Product Books for new products

v  Assist with industrial launches

         Help train lab techs and/or operators on new products

         Help evaluate quality of newly industrialized products

v  Evaluate packaging (paper) for Brie

 

9.      Trials to improve the quality or processes of existing products or to enhance product value

v  Organize and conduct trials (plant and/or benchtop)

v  Evaluate products and analyze results

v  Help implement solutions

10.  Communicate progress in projects to management during New Product Meetings, etc.

11.  Document trial procedures, data, results, and conclusions/next steps

12.  Provide technical support to the plant when needed to solve problems or improve products/processes

13.  Send product samples of R&D products to customers and sales/marketing

14.  Evaluate competitor products

15.  Manage the inventory of R&D samples

16.  Use SAP to charge products consumed to R&D (or other departments) and to create purchase orders

Position Requirements:

 

         5 or more years of food product development experience.

         Bachelors or Masters Degree.

         Enthusiastic team leader with outstanding motivational & organizational skills.

         Strong analytical skills.

         Experience in Lean manufacturing, Continuous Improvement Tools, & TPM.

         Excellent organizational skills with a high degree of initiative and flexibility.

Must be comfortable at giving and receiving open feedback.
