Research & Development


Manager level candidate for Processed Cheese Sauce area will manage around 6 scientists and technicians.†† Would be responsible for all aspects of development for this business segment. Currently there are three platforms, shelf-stable portion control pouches, single serve dipping cups, and food service pouches (could be refrigerated, frozen or shelf-stable).†† Looking for someone with experience in processed cheese or processed cheese sauce, and management experience.† Reports to a Dir of R&D.†


The Product Development Manager is a principle contributor to the Research & Development team with new product development, research projects, sensory evaluations and maintenance of existing products. Must operate effectively both independently and as a leader within a team in a fast-paced environment.† The ability to propose and implement research and product development initiatives is essential.† Excellent critical thinking, communication skills, and ability to employ a scientific approach are a must.



  • Effectively communicate knowledge of food industry and product functionality as a technical expert in cross-functional and customer discussions.
  • Develop product and technical presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Serve as a representative of the R&D Department and the Company at industry trade shows and during customer interactions.
  • Manage cross-functional technical projects and relationships.
  • Direct research and development relating to sauce, or flavor opportunity area specialty.
  • Contribute to ideation and creative innovation by keeping current with literature and new developments in the field of food science and technology as well as customer and consumer trends.
  • Demonstrate a working technical knowledge of ingredient functionality and technical terminology in order to develop new product formulations or adjust existing formulae.
  • Apply understanding of internal flavor profiles, functionalities, and usage levels to make appropriate application recommendations.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and ingredient cost savings.
  • Independently manage multiple projects from concept generation through scale-up in accordance with customer requirements and project parameters.
  • Lead pilot plant trials and product scale-ups including scheduling, ordering ingredients, and organizing pre and post-trial meetings.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for direct reports (Food Technicians).†
  • Manage staff - daily activity including the training, supervising, and mentoring of 6 or more Food Technicians and Food Scientists.
  • Use basic computer skills including the effective use of Microsoft Office and Genesis Nutritional Software.
  • Follow Good Manufacturing Practices when working in lab/production settings.

         Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or management.


Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelorís degree or higher degree in Dairy [Food] Science, Food Science, Culinology, or related science field.
  • 10 or more years experience in the food industry; with 3-5 years experience at Senior Food Scientist or comparable level.
  • Ability to lift 25 to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand of extended periods of time, up to several hours.
