JO 15499 Applications Manager


1 hr North of Chicago, IL (relocation assistance provided)

Salary Range:

$Six-figure base + 10% Bonus


The applications team at this Company is critical in the development of new food and beverage product formulations.  The applications team works in collaboration with the flavor creations team in ideation and new concept development.  In some instances the applications team does full product development as well as provides technical assistance to customers for finished products and supports product scale up at the customer facilities.

This is a hands-on position that will lead and manage the applications team. He or she will be responsible for working closely with R&D, Sales, and Marketing in developing winning products for the Company’s customers and selected markets. Travel approximately 10%-20%. Reports to the Technical Director.

Roles and Responsibilities:

·         Lead and mentor a professional team of 8 applications food scientists

·         Proactive product development of food and beverage systems demonstrating the efficacy of our flavors and the overall creative capability of our organization

·         Management of the applications of flavors for customer products or internally developed products

·         Foster technical to technical relationships with customers

·         Play an active role in presentations to customers

·         Ideally this person would welcome hands-on bench work


Required Experience:

·         Bachelors in Food Science or other related applied science; Masters preferred

·         8-10+ yrs of product development experience in foods, beverages and flavors

·         5+ yrs progressive people management exp. in a food or food ingredient company


Required Skills:

·         Strong oral and written communication skills to interact with customers, account managers and technical staff.

·         Ability to lead and mentor the applications team; consensus building

·         Expertise in flavor applications, the selection and testing of flavors for a broad range of food products, understanding usage rates, interactions of flavors with other food ingredients, effects of further processing

·         Understanding of the use rates and applications for preservatives, acidulants, stabilizers and colors

·         Knowledge of pilot equipment, (UHT, Homogenization, etc.)

·         Skilled in Good Laboratory Practice for a food product development laboratory

·         Strong understanding of sensory science to include different methodologies
