Salary Range:



The Plant Engineer is responsible for providing technical support and expertise on fixed and rotating equipment specification, design, operation, and mechanical integrity. This work includes, but may not be limited to, working with compressors, turbines, heat exchangers, piping, storage tanks, valves, pressure relieving devices, boilers, mechanical instrumentation components etc. The successful candidate will possess proven experience with applicable codes and their respective requirements as they relate to fixed and rotating equipment.


1.       Supervise the Maintenance Foreman and Maintenance Department which includes approximately 25 employees with expertise in mechanical engineering, I&E engineering, reliability, vibration analysis and inspection.

2.       Develop, evaluate, and maintain computerized Preventative Maintenance Program.

3.       Ensure a safe work environment through active participation in safety programs.

4.       Develop and implement energy and cost savings ideas.

5.       Build relationships with vendors, contractors, and regulatory groups to affect productive outcomes.

6.       Develop and manage annual capital and operating budgets; track and report performance.

7.       Work in collaboration with plant and corporate engineering to develop, execute, and support capital and process improvement projects.

8.       Partner with the plant operations leadership team to achieve monthly efficiencies, labor and raw material usage objectives. Monitor progress and take action to provide appropriate support to achieve shared objectives.

9.       Ensure effective execution of scheduled maintenance.

10.   Work with peers, managers, and teams to ensure the execution of the operating production plan.

11.   Provide timely and accurate reports on equipment, systems and facility operations as necessary.

12.   Develop and implement preventative maintenance program and work order protocols to ensure plant efficiency goals are met.

13.   Plan and monitor new equipment installation, equipment overhaul, and modifications necessary to achieve maximum performance.

14.   Investigate, diagnose and formulate equipment repair recommendations that enhance equipment on-stream reliability as requested by Value Stream teams per individual task, project or turnaround schedule.

15.   Collaborate with Value Stream teams to develop pre-turnaround and turnaround equipment inspection plans specific to equipment design specifications and its process conditions per individual turnaround schedule. Actively participate in turnaround and/or plant shutdown activities.

16.   Develop temporary equipment and piping repair plans per individual task or turnaround schedule. Evaluate and recommend eventual permanent corrective action per task or turnaround schedules.

17.   Provide technical expertise to plant personnel (e.g. designers, inspectors, maintenance, operations, project and process engineers, etc.) regarding design and fabrication specifications per individual project schedule.

18.   Identify and implement improvements to the mechanical integrity program.

19.   Develop and maintain engineering specifications including, but not limited to, pressure vessel specifications, piping specifications, valve specifications, paint specifications, and insulation specifications.

20.   Ensure Plant Engineering is meeting the end user's needs and are in compliance with all laws, regulations, and standards.

21.   Act as a corporate resource on API, ANSI, ASME, and other applicable recognized standards for fixed and rotating equipment design, fabrication, inspection, repair, and alteration.

22.   Be self motivated, able to prioritize tasks based on ever-changing plant needs, a good decision maker, and determined to continually expand knowledge of industry standards and practices for the benefit of oneself and the company.

23.   Continually evaluate ways to improve site safety.

24.   Coach and develop the organization to execute tasks at a “World Class Level” of performance.

25.   Develop a multi-year strategy for improving the skills and ability of the maintenance team.

26.   Effectively manage parts inventory to ensure low carrying cost yet sufficient supplies for repairs.

27.   Remain current with maintenance and utility management standards to drive the organization forward.

28.   Provide appropriate support and training to ensure the plant is compliant with all applicable OSHA and Safe Quality Foods requirements; provide advanced technical training pertaining to equipment troubleshooting, electronics, PLC logics, etc.


Internal Controls:

Understands and complies with established departmental processes and procedures designed to support internal controls efforts. Identifies and brings to the attention of department management internal controls deficiencies.


Successful incumbents will have:

1.       A Baccalaureate in Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university is required, Masters or Professional Engineer license highly preferred required.

2.       Expert Knowledge of Computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

3.       Three or more years of hands-on in-plant experience required, whether permanent or periodic temporary assignment.

4.       Five or more years of engineering related experience in the manufacturing industry or comparable field.

5.       Understanding of mechanical integrity requirements as defined in OSHA 1910.119.

6.       Experience with ammonia, urea, UAN processes is preferred.

7.       Five or more years of experience with mechanical integrity is preferred.

8.       Experience with inspection management and RBI software, such as Meridium's Mechanical Integrity Module, is preferred.

9.       Strong management skills required, including team leading, decision making, and prioritizing.

10.   Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.

11.   The ability to prove drug and alcohol free at random or for cause.

12.   Proven experience leading an organization as a departmental leader, managing direct reports as well as small groups in independent task force assignments.

13.   Strong communication skills required to provide written reports, conduct communication sessions, and facilitate problem solving discussions.

14.   Working knowledge and experience with various continuous improvement programs such as TPM, Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, and Autonomous Maintenance.

15.   Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, welding, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, and PLC controls.

16.   Knowledge and understanding of plant utility equipment. Boilers, air compressors, water systems including reverse osmosis, ammonia refrigeration, and electrical distribution.
