JO 15648 Maintenance Specialist – Grain Milling

This position is responsible for the design and execution of the repair and maintenance program at our food manufacturing facility. This includes both traditional R&M activities (for example, regular and ad-hoc systems service, repairs, maintenance), as well as the operation and active upkeep of our steam generator and blanching screw. In addition, this position is responsible for maintaining the facility’s workshop and performing equipment-related safety training. This position also participates in plant leadership meetings and assists in the planning and installation of plant improvements/ capital projects as necessary.


Essential Job

Maintenance, Service, and Documentation:

·        Reviews existing preventative maintenance program and enhances the program to address any identified gaps or areas for improvement

·        Performs all preventive maintenance, equipment repair and general maintenance.

·        Ensures all processing of work orders and documentation of work performed is completed in an accurate and timely manner. 

·        Performs fabrication and welding. 

·        Performs electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and repairs.

·        Maintains all service records, maintenance schedules, and related sanitation/safety reports for all plant equipment.  

·        Manages the perpetual spare parts inventory, including parts movement and changes in material used or received.

·        Communicates with team members regarding maintenance scheduling.

·        Continually monitors processing equipment to verify equipment is operating properly.

·        Maintains a clean and safe work area adhering to GMI Food Safety and Sanitation protocols.

·        Stops the production process and immediately, reports to Plant Production Manager, and complete written report when safety and food quality is in question.

·        Works in other areas of the plant as required to support packaging, bagging, clean-up, product changeovers, miscellaneous grain handling, and other duties or tasks assigned by Plant Production Manager.

·        Promptly and thoroughly documents all maintenance, service and work-order activities within our internal computer systems


Limited Equipment Set Up and Operation:

·         Performs daily set up and any required operation of the steam generator/boiler and blanching screw per the manufacturers operating instructions. 

·        Performs routine inspections of steam generator/boiler and blanching screw systems and basic preventive maintenance as required by manufacturer and/or GMI protocols.


Food, Employee and Workplace Safety

  • Follows Good Manufacturing Practices at all times to eliminate any potential risk of product contamination.
  • Participates in all audits that relate to food safety and the use of GMP’s.

·         Knows, follows and reminds others to execute all safety, quality and GMP’s policy and procedures, including but not limited to lock-out, tag-out, electrical and welding safety, sanitation, food safety, and HACCP.  Employee safety guidelines must be followed at all times.  Procedures for working safely are a priority and this position is responsible to ensure all staff follows safety procedures.


Miscellaneous Duties:

·        Manages maintenance budget.

·        Exercises good judgment and decision making to contribute to the efficient operation of the department.

·        Works in other areas of the plant as required and directed by Plant Production Manager or General Manager.

·        Seeks other tasks when areas of direct responsibility are covered.

·        Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

·         High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 2 years post-secondary education or equivalent experience. 

·         Previous experience operating a steam system

·         Previous millwright experience is desired.

·         Possess a high mechanical aptitude, good troubleshooting skills and a basic understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated planning and organizing skills as well as meticulous record keeping abilities.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a highly organized fashion with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Self-motivated, team player with the ability to self-manage priorities.

·         Must be able to read and speak English.

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary to assist in decision making and communicating maintenance repair schedules with other team members.

·         The ability to adapt and change directions as process and/or productions schedules may be revised on short notice.

  • Computer skills in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel.

·         Ability to work with others in a team environment.

·         Ability to meet the Physical Demands of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. 


Physical Demands & Work Conditions:

·         Ability to travel throughout the plant and into all areas of production and maintenance.  

·         The ability to lift up to 100 pounds rarely, 50 -100 pounds rarely, 25 - 50 pounds occasionally, and 0 – 25 pounds frequently. 

·         Activities include walking, climbing ladders, squatting, lifting, bending, twisting, pulling, pushing, inserting, sitting, standing, accumulating and collating motions.

·         Standard work week is Monday – Friday, with a 30 minute lunch.  Additional hours outside of the standard work week are to be expected. 

·         This company performs drug testing and background checks.
